Smokin’ Hot Buffet & Grill [Review]: Is This Coventry’s BEST All You Can Eat Buffet?
Smokin’ Hot Buffet & Grill is an all-you-can-eat restaurant in Coventry, offering a vast selection of international dishes, from sizzling grilled meats to fresh sushi and bold Caribbean flavours.
Formerly known as Umami World Kitchen before being rebranded, Smokin’ Hot Buffet & Grill promises “premium global cuisine at an unbeatable price,” with a claim of being “the UK’s first buffet and grill“. This buffet-style grill invites diners to indulge in everything from tender char siu pork to spicy jerk chicken and Teppanyaki beef.
Having travelled to 40+ countries indulging in global cuisines—from Mexican to Thai, Middle Eastern to Asian – we were eager to see if Smokin’ Hot Buffet lived up to its name. Did the variety impress? Were the pricier meat dishes worth loading up on? And most importantly, did it leave us satisfied or regretting the indulgence?
Below, find out how Billy and I rated the experience, what we loved (and didn’t), and whether this buffet is worth the visit.

Smokin’ Hot Buffet & Grill: our experience
Upon arrival, we were greeted warmly and shown to our table, before making our way to the buffet counters – which was neatly laid out in sections: sushi and salad, comfort food and pizza, Asian, Mexican, Indian, grill, and Caribbean – making it easy to navigate.
Since we wanted to maximise value, we skipped the cheaper filler dishes (chips, plain pasta, etc.) and headed straight for the premium proteins. Here’s how it went:

The Highlights:
✅ Pork Ribs – Fall-off-the-bone tender with a sticky, smoky glaze. Easily a contender for star of the show.
✅ Peking Duck wraps – the shredded duck was crispy, delicious and had a nice texture.
✅ Teppanyaki Grilled Beef – Juicy, slightly charred, and packed with umami. We went back for seconds.
✅ Jiachang Tofu – Surprisingly flavourful, with a crispy exterior and a kick of chilli.
✅ Char Siu Pork – Sweet, caramelised, and melt-in-the-mouth.

As well as the above, I rather enjoyed the King Prawns and Billy particularly liked the beef flank. We agreed that the Gilafi seekh kebab was impressive and would recommend. We tried the spicy fish, and though it wasn’t as good as the one we had in Hong Kong, it was nice enough – soft and flaky, and not too spicy.

After devouring the grilled meats, we left some space to try the various Indian options available. We sampled the tangy veg Jalfrezi, Lamb Rogan Josh, the biryani, and Butter Chicken – they were each delicious although a little on the sweet and creamy side.

The Letdowns:
❌ Mexican Nachos – Despite the appealing Mexican-themed presentation and cheese fountain at the bar, the beef mince was unfortunately runny and lacked depth. Needed more seasoning and texture.
❌ Jerk Chicken – as huge fans of Jamaican food, the jerk chicken drumstick didn’t quite meet our expectations. It was dry and lacking that famous hot jerk sauce.

Desserts & Drinks
The desserts were neatly displayed close to the entrance as you arrive and there was an excellent assortment of cakes, sweets, puddings and sauces available – from piling waffle towers to various ice cream flavours which you could customise your own DIY sundaes, to hot apple crumble and custard, plenty of rich syrups, whipped creams and sauce options and an infinite chocolate tap to drizzle warm chocolate over whatever you choose – fruits, cakes, ice cream.
We didn’t go all-out on desserts but we did sample a selection of freshly sliced fruit, ice cream, apple crumble and custard, and the small cake selections. Billy thought the lemon cheesecake was really delicious and the chocolate orange cake was up to scratch.

The verdict
Billy and I left Smokin’ Hot Buffet & Grill thoroughly satisfied, though with a few caveats. It’s safe to say, Smokin’ Hot Buffet & Grill is one of the best places to eat in Coventry.
The standout dishes – like the smoky pork ribs, umami-packed Teppanyaki beef, and crispy Peking duck wraps – made the visit worthwhile. Even the Jiachang Tofu surprised us with its bold flavours and perfect crunch.
The grill section lived up to its name, delivering tender, well-seasoned meats (especially the char siu pork, Gilafi seekh kebabs and king prawns). We enjoyed watching the chef select and sear freshly cut beef on the grill. While the Indian curries leaned sweet for our tastes, they were still rich and comforting – just not as fiery as we’d hoped.
The dessert section is absolutely packed with so many options – from fresh fruits to sickly sweet treats that really complete the experience. If we had more time, we’d have come back to try some glazed waffles and a sundae.

That said, not every dish hit the mark. The nachos suffered from soggy mince, and the jerk chicken lacked the punchy heat we craved. But with so many options, it was easy to focus on the winners.
Would we return? Absolutely – especially for the grill and Asian sections. Those with a sweet tooth will be in heaven here. Just come hungry, skip the fillers, and save room for that sticky rib glaze.

Smokin’ Hot Buffet & Grill: vibes and atmosphere
The restaurant has a lively, casual vibe, with crackling fires on tv screens, and an open kitchen adding to the energy. The seating is spacious, and the decor is modern with subtle grill-themed accents. There were also quiet corners and areas that are perfect for those wanting more privacy or a space to eat away from the bustle and noise of staff and customers.
It wasn’t crowded when we visited on a Saturday lunchtime, and the buzz made it feel vibrant without being chaotic.

Staff were attentive, clearing plates quickly and checking if we needed drinks refills. The grill chef was happy to customise dishes on request (extra spice, well-done beef, etc.).

Affordability
At £22.99 per person (dinner price), it’s a solid deal if you prioritise quality meats and protein over filler carbs. Compared to à la carte dining, the variety and unlimited servings make it worthwhile, especially if you arrive on an empty stomach.

Any setbacks?
Overall, we had a fantastic experience. Billy noted that some seasoned dishes like the jerk chicken could be improved, and I thought the Mexican beef could do with more flavour too. Also, while the buffet was well-stocked, a few premium items (like the salmon sushi) ran out briefly before being replenished.
Overall, Ariel and I were highly satisfied with the food we ate, we found the staff to be friendly, and we were not made to wait on arrival. We found the prices reflected the service and food quality.
